Week 28

This week I’ve been having a ton of weird dreams. First, I had a funny dream which pretty much revolved around a strawberry pie that my friend Donna made. And the next night I dreamt that I, very nonchalantly, gave birth in my Grandma’s bathtub! I was taking a bath and then, as I leaned over, the baby just slid right out! She didn’t cry but, I clearly remember her looking up at me with a puzzled expression. I cleaned her up, wrapped her up in a towel (no messy cord or placenta to worry about in my dream birth) and praised her for such a quick and painless arrival. Haha! If only!

And according to this, I may not be the only one dreaming!

Dreaming about your baby at 28 weeks pregnant? Your baby may be dreaming about you, too. Brain wave activity measured in a developing fetus shows different sleep cycles, including the rapid eye movement phase — the stage when dreaming occurs.

Oh, what could my little eggplant be dreaming about?

In other news, Liam went back to (part-time) daycare this week and it’s been an adjustment for the both of us. On the one hand, I feel like I have so much time to myself now! Between yesterday and today I was able to clean, go shopping, enjoy a free bagel at Noah’s Bagels (it was national bagel day!), indulge in a MUCH needed manicure/pedicure, get a haircut AND take the mom-mobile to the car wash! But, I just can’t help missing my little guy! No matter how much I get done, the best part of my day is picking him up from daycare and getting the best. hugs. ever!

Week 28 update:

Total weight gain so far: No clue as I have yet to step on the scale after last week’s revelation. Guess you’ll have to wait for next week!

Cravings: I waited anxiously for my glucose test results this week which only made me crave the sugar I was trying to avoid. So, I had a boatload of mandarin oranges (fresh, not the canned ones – although those are pretty good too).

What I’m excited about: I passed my glucose test! Hip Hip Hooray! My iron is still a little low so my Doctor suggested more red meat, leafy greens and …red grapes! I love red grapes (I especially love when grapes turn into wine but that’s another story for another day)! How did I not know that these were high in iron?

What I’m nervous about: Writing out birth plan scenarios this week. Even though I hope to go the planned c-section route, there are so many unknowns. :/ Plus, we will need to rely on others for help with Liam and I just hate being a burden.

New this week: Booked a newborn/family session this week! So excited about that! Also, received the swaddle blanket I mentioned in last week’s post. I can’t wait to wrap our girl up in it!

Week 27 – Hello 3rd Trimester

We’ve officially entered third trimester! Here’s what’s happening:

Before I start with the baby stuff, I have to tell you about the new reed diffuser I bought for our bedroom. Guys, I think I am OBSESSED! It smells sooooo good! Technically I think it’s considered a holiday scent (aisle end clearance section, holla!) but I’m in <3!  The awful part? I tossed the box before I knew that it was my scent soulmate and now I don’t know what exact scent is. I’ve since been to Target and have had no luck finding another! Wah!

OK, now back to our regularly scheduled programming…

This week, I’ve been putting in some effort towards taking a step back and really experiencing this pregnancy (though she’s pretty hard to ignore these days). Some examples: When I wake up, I make sure to say “Good Morning” to her before heading out to greet Liam and Asaf. And when I sing Liam his bedtime songs (Can’t Help Falling In Love and Love Me Tender, in case you’re curious), I rub my belly so she knows I’m singing to her too. Occasionally, I’ll even ask if she liked the peanut butter toast or the chocolate chip cookie I just ate. Note: I always imagine her nodding enthusiastically to any and all food related questions. Also, I bought her a swaddle blanket today. Isn’t it just the sweetest? Now to hunt down some baby bows!

At almost a 2 full pounds, she is now the size of a cauliflower head! She has been moving quite a lot this week and I think she is prone to hiccups! But the big news of the week is that she can now recognize our voices! How exciting!

Her auditory development(hearing) is progressing as the network of nerves to the ears matures — though the sounds she hears are muffled thanks to the creamy coating of vernix covering those ears.

I love knowing that she is already becoming familiar with us, even before she arrives!

Week 27 update:

Total weight gain so far: So, I went to the Doctor this week and discovered that I’ve gained 24 pounds! I would like to mention that I had a big breakfast the day I was weighed, but still, slightly more than I was expecting.

Cravings: Trying to cut back on the junk this week so, Liam and I have been eating a lot of Jazz apples from Trader Joe’s. Sweet with just a hint of sour.

What I’m excited about: Taking a look at photographers this week. I regret not having newborn pictures taken of Liam and really want to book someone with experience taking great sibling shots!

What I’m nervous about: Waiting on the results from my glucose test! Eek!

New this week: This week I had a pregnancy massage while Asaf and Liam went to Gymboree. It was super relaxing and the masseuse said I had great skin. 😉

Note to Baby: We’ve set up the bassinet in our room and little by little we are getting ready for your arrival. Just sit back and relax – you’re doing great in there!

26 weeks – The Many Adventures of Liam the Kid

As I mentioned in last week’s post, I have postponed Liam’s transition back to daycare. It’s been difficult for me to think about spending all day away from him (hmm, NOW who has separation anxiety?!), even though I know that he will enjoy the socialization. I guess I’ve been getting used to this stay at home Mom gig (and yes, I’m rockin’ that Mom bun every chance I get!). Every week I plan out our activities and it’s actually become quite fun for me. Library storytime, play dates, free museum days, free trial music classes – I mark them all down and try to cross as many off as possible. It’s a rush – like those people that go absolutely crazy clipping coupons all week and then get unbelievably giddy standing in the checkout line.

A few of our recent adventures:

He is totally questioning my parenting skills in that last picture. I think he was a little freaked out by the performers. To be honest, I wasn’t prepared for the singing clowns myself.

I like to think that these outings are beneficial for 2.0 too. 🙂 Yes, I imagine my little cucumber is getting used to constant noise and movement (from all the Liam chasing) which I can’t help but see as a good thing. Here’s what else she’s been up to this week:

At 26 weeks, your baby’s lungs start to develop surfactant. This substance helps keep the lungs inflated after birth, and now that it’s being produced, your little one has a better chance of survival if she were born now. Her fat stores are steadily increasing, and she’s also continuing to grow bone material. Your growing baby now weighs in at close to 800 grams (two pounds). She’s about 14 inches long, or roughly as long as a cucumber.

Week 26 update:

Total weight gain so far: 20 lbs

Cravings: While in line at Trader Joe’s I asked Asaf if he’d like to split a dark chocolate truffle bar. The next night I ate 1/4… and then over the course of the next few days, I somehow managed to eat the whole thing! I’d like to buy him another one but I’m pretty sure we all know how that will go. I love chocolate and dark chocolate is my favorite by far!

What I’m excited about: Next week I’ll hit the 7 month/3rd trimester mark! Woo Hoo!

What I’m nervous about: I am going in for my glucose test next week. I think I’ll pass but it’s still quite nerve wracking.

New this week: I have been having a few lightheaded moments which I attribute to my poor iron levels (darn genetics!). I am currently on an iron supplement in addition to my regular prenatal vitamins but, depending on how I feel this week – I may need to up the dosage. I will definitely be talking to my OB about it at my next appointment.

Note to Baby: Hello, Sweet Girl! You certainly are an active little thing! Especially at night! Sorry that Liam has been prodding at you a bit lately – I think he is wondering what you are doing inside there!

24/25 weeks – Mom Guilt

Thank goodness for those annoying  informative BabyCenter/What To Expect emails or I’d never know how many weeks have passed! I was just telling Asaf, “you know, she’s the size of an eggplant now.” and he said “Eggplant?! What happened to mango?”. “We missed it, Sweetheart.” We missed it. I literally don’t know where the last weeks have gone. At times I wonder, am I missing out on my entire 2nd pregnancy experience? That leads me to today’s topic: Mom guilt.

There are many days I find myself thinking that I’m just not prepared for Baby Girl. And I can’t help feeling like that’s because I haven’t taken the time to really focus on my pregnancy this go around. Don’t get me wrong -I feel the (constant) kicks, I frequently browse the girl section of Baby Gap and I text possible names to Asaf practically every other day, and yet – I can’t help but feel like I’m cheating her somehow.

And speaking of getting cheated, what about my little Liam? I’ve been wondering more and more, will he resent our newest addition for stealing his parents? (I know you must be thinking “It’s a little late for that now.” You’re  absolutely right.) I figure this kind of thinking must be the equivalent to getting cold feet before your wedding day. Of course, I’ve talked to Asaf about all of this (mostly at night when he’s trying to sleep). He says a sibling is the best gift you can give a child. However, it should be noted that this is coming from a guy who was literally born as part of a set (he’s a twin) so he’s never known any other way. This came up on my Instagram feed yesterday and made me feel a little better.

Anywho, onto baby updates! During the past two weeks, Baby has been growing lots of hair! She now has a full set of eyelashes and eyebrows and of course, hair atop her head!  Her nostrils have begun to open up which allows her to practice “breathing” even though she won’t take her first breath for another 3 months. She weighs just less than two pounds now but, boy does she know how to make her presence known!

Earlier this week I was called back in for some additional scans of Baby’s heart which was a little scary. But luckily, they were able to get the angles they were missing this time and it didn’t take nearly as long. We even got an additional shot of her face! She’s a cutie that’s for sure!

Week 25 update:

Total weight gain so far: 19 lbs

Cravings: Nothing too exciting to report unfortunately. I’ve officially reached the point of pregnancy where there is a LOT less room for food which can sometimes make eating a chore.

What I’m excited about: As we approach third trimester we are getting much closer to choosing a name!!!. Also, baby received a sweet gift in the mail from my long distance friend Gaby yesterday.

What I’m nervous about: I’ve postponed Liam’s return to daycare for a few more weeks. I blamed it on his recent illness (croup again! This time with a tonsil infection!) But really, I think I’m just being selfish! 🙁

New this week: I’m fairly certain that Baby Girl is no longer breech. I feel her low in my belly whereas I felt Liam’s head up and under my rib cage from this point on. As a result of her location, my belly button has “popped”!!!

Weeks 17-23 Because I Suck At Blogging

Over the last few weeks, I thought about blogging several times. I also thought (a lot) about abandoning the whole project. But, I feel like I must keep on, no matter how behind I’ve gotten. Not for me, for her. I want our daughter to have these entries — to know that she was just as important, just as loved as her big brother. But, as you can see, it hasn’t been easy! We’ve been pretty busy! Let me fill you in…

We went to Israel again! This visit was especially nice because we got to celebrate Hannukah and Asaf’s Dad’s birthday. Also, we have a lot of friends there with kids around Liam’s age and we really got a kick out of watching them play and interact together for the first time. The trip itself was a lot of fun and in case you’re wondering Liam slept during 90% of the flights (score!!!). BUT, I do have to admit that we did have our challenges. It took Liam 10 days (out of 13) to adjust to the time change…and a week to adjust back. Heavy sigh.

Christmas came and went. Asaf got sick and then Liam got sick. For Christmas Santa brought me a superb immune system, which I’m crediting to prenatals, and stuffed A&L’s stockings with plenty of Kleenex.

Second trimester anatomy scan went well. Our little Ladybug measured 14oz with a strong, steady heartbeat of 145bpm.  During the last few weeks she has been doing so much growing and by the end of this month, she will have doubled in size! It’s strange to think that her skin is still translucent but on the ultrasounds, she looks great! At our last appointment, we even caught her  yawning (awwww)!

Liam is also going through a growth spurt! He’s pretty much eating us out of house and home lately but, I’m so thankful that he isn’t a picky eater. Last night we had sushi and he ate eel, seaweed salad and shrimp tempura! He’s also sleeping well and has finally adjusted to one long daily nap. Every day I am shocked at how big my little boy is getting and how much he is starting to resemble his Aba!

I just love this face!

Week 23 update:

Total weight gain so far: I’m up 17 pounds now which is 4 more than I gained at this point with Liam. To be honest, I’m shocked it isn’t more! 😛

Cravings: This girl is a bad influence! Over the last few weeks I’ve craved rice krispy treats, bean burritos and french fries! With Liam I was dreaming about french toast and nectarines!

What I’m excited about: Baby girl is kicking all the time and I just love it! Asaf has been able to feel her and thinks she might be a future soccer player!

What I’m nervous about: Soon Liam will be transitioning back to part-time daycare. I’m hopeful it will go smoothly but, always find myself preparing for the worst.

New this week: Scouting out diaper deals. Time to start stocking up!

Note to Baby: We love you so much and are constantly thinking/talking about your upcoming arrival. Please know that my lapse in entries does not reflect lack of thought. Xoxo Baby Girl!

16 weeks

Week 16, you weren’t so sweet. This week I came down with whatever it was that Liam had. It was awful and I even spread a lil somethin’ somethin’ to Asaf (although, thankfully he seems to be recovering in record time which I am thrilled about because, let’s be honest, ain’t nobody got time for that a sick husband when you’re carrying an avocado sized baby in your belly and you’ve got a booger filled Little AND you’re feeling less than 100 yourself).

temp funny file

Let’s talk some more about that little avocado though, shall we? This week her eyes have started moving back and forth, even though her eyelids are still sealed shut. Also, she now has eyelashes and eyebrows. Hopefully she won’t inherit my crazy eyebrows. Actually, scratch that. Crazy eyebrows can be tamed. I’d hate it if she didn’t have any eyebrows at all!

Week 16 update:

Total weight gain so far: Next week I promise this number will be more accurate. I’m going to the doctor on the 20th. For now, let’s guesstimate 8.

Cravings: More soup this week. I finally got around to roasting the pumpkin Liam painted for Halloween (see below) and I made it into a pumpkin, apple, carrot soup. I used a recipe from Pioneer woman (found here  if you’re the curious type) but, it wasn’t coming out so great so I had to improvise by adding the apple and carrots and additional spices. Turned out very nice but, not sure I can ever make it the same way again! hahaha

What I’m excited about: Liam and I have enrolled in Gymboree and I’m setting up all sorts of play dates for him. Also, I’ve gone through his newborn – 6 months clothes and sorted out all the things that 2.0 can use. I’m happy to announce that there is quite a lot since I’ve always loved a girl in navy blue and gray 😉 Just need to add a few pink hair bows.

What I’m nervous about:Preparing for our trip next month to Israel. A bit nervous about the 12 hour flight!

New this week: Started making a list of things we need for 2.0. So far: bouncer, bottle warmer, new cushion for nursing chair, baby carrier. How did we survive without these things before? Easy. We didn’t. We borrowed these for Liam and have since given them back 🙂

14 weeks – Momemployment

The last two weeks, well, I’m not even sure how to describe them or where to begin. Days after writing my last post, in which we found out Baby 2 is a girl, and just ONE day before we left for our AMAZING Hawaiian vacation, I was laid off from work. After roughly eight years, several of my colleagues and I were pulled into a meeting and told that our positions were being eliminated as part of a company re-organization. I was shocked, I was upset and…dare I say, I was a little relieved. It was a dead end job and I was going no where – slowly. Sure, the timing could be better – but all it meant was that my family needed to go through a little re-organization of our own.

So here I am, 14 weeks pregnant and a newly appointed stay-at-home Mom.

I’ve been working steadily since I was 18 years old. I’ve been at 4 companies, held 6 job titles and gone through 3 layoffs. And all of that has led me here, to this little guy- the best and most demanding boss I’ve ever had.

After almost two weeks, I can honestly say we’re still adjusting. . . but it’s so great. Even when it’s challenging, it’s so worth it. I feel so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to spend this time with him. And while I do plan on going back to work eventually (not sure my chances at being hired pregnant are so great), for now, I really think this is where I belong.

Week 14 update:

Total weight gain so far: Not sure…6 lbs? 7? Haven’t been to the doctor again yet

Cravings: Now that I’m home, I’m cooking just about every day and not eating so much junk food. The one thing I ate the most this week? Kiwi!

What I’m excited about: Have not had any dizzy spells since week 12. Whew!

What I’m nervous about: Mild back pain. Need to incorporate more stretching.

New this week: Official Facebook announcement tonight!

Note to Baby: I think I felt you this week. Could it be? Was that you? Kick twice if you’re diggin’ this blog. 😉
